MEANING OF HOSPITALITY
Hospitality means helping and caring for visitors. When we show hospitality, we should do it willingly and with love, because the Bible says that we should practise hospitality without complaining.
The need for hospitality
There are people who might be far from home, or who suddenly get into difficult situations. Examples are travellers and accident victims or victims of an armed robbery attack. Such people need to be helped by anybody that comes across them.
There is a story in the Bible about a Jewish man who was travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho and was attacked by robbers. They took everything he had and left him badly wounded by the roadside. His fellow
Jews saw him and did not help him. It was a Samaritan who helped the man. Samaritans were hated by the Jews. What the Samaritan did was hospitality and that is why he is called the Good Samaritan in the Bible.
We have some poor or less privileged people among us who do not even have food, clothes and shelter, and are, therefore, in need of help. Examples are the orphans, abandoned children and widows. We also have sick people that need to be cared for, especially HIV/AIDS patients and physically challenged people like the lame and the blind.
WEEK 2
Reasons for hospitality
Some reasons for showing hospitality are:
1 When we are hospitable, we are obeying the word of God. One of the things God says in his word is that we should care for the needy and strangers among us. Examples:
a) Jesus says in Matthew 25: 31-46 that on the day of judgment, those who do not care for the needy and strangers would be condemned. This means that they will go to Hell fire. Then those who are kind to the needy and who welcome strangers will go to heaven.
b) God says in the law He gave us that if someone’s brother be comes poor and cannot help himself, he should be helped (Lev 25:35).
c) In Deuteronomy 15: 11, God says we should bear in mind that there will always be the poor and the needy among us, and we should take care of them.
d) In Paul’s advice to the Church leaders, he said that as servants of God, they should be hospitable (Titus 1:8 and 1Timothy 3:2).
2 Another reason for being hospitable is to save lives. If one travels to a place and has a serious problem like an accident and there is no one to help, the person could die. Through people that are hospitable, many people that had serious accidents have been saved from dying. Some abandoned babies, children, poor and sick people are alive today because people are shown hospitality to them, thereby obeying God.
3 We should show hospitality out of love. God loves us and says we should love one another. Love makes us willing to help anybody we see that is in need.
The widow of Zarephath welcomed Elijah
During the reign of Ahab, the people of Israel were disobedient to God. They were worshipping idols. Elijah declared a drought in Israel in the name of God and it happened. There was famine, because rain stopped falling. As Elijah was faithful to God, God provided for him. God first took him to Cherith where there was water for him to drink. He commanded birds to feed Elijah with bread and meat, morning and evening. When the water at Cherith dried up, God took Elijah to Zarephath and directed him to a widow who fed him. Elijah met the widow at the gate of Zarephath as she was gathering firewood to prepare a meal for herself and her son. It was to be the last food in her house. After that meal there would be nothing again for her and her son to eat. When Elijah saw her, he asked her to get him water to drink. As the widow was going to get him water, Elijah asked her to also prepare a meal for him. The widow explained that what she had was only the last meal remaining for herself and her son, but Elijah told her not to fear. He told her to prepare for him and then for herself and her son. He explained to her that God had revealed to him that the food in her house would never finish till the time God would end the drought. The widow obeyed Elijah. She served him first and the food in her house did not finish. The widow kept having food throughout the period of famine and drought.
The widow welcomed Elijah in her house and obeyed Elijah’s comThe widow of Zarephath provided food for Elijah and to care for him first before herself and her son. God made the food in her house not to finish. While Elijah was there, the woman’s son fell sick and died. Elijah prayed to God and the son came back to life. God made all this possible because she was hospitable to Elijah. She had welcomed Elijah but never knew that he was a prophet of God.

Moral responsibility of showing unselfish love to others
God wants us to show love to others. It is our moral responsibility to show unselfish love to others by telling the truth. We must be open-minded. We should do for others what we want them to do for us. We must not be selfish. Thinking of other people’s progress and success will always give us success and progress. We take good care of others when we help them during the time of their need. We should support others at the time when they need our support. We can share gifts with people, and help our friends that are in need.
The love between Jonathan and David
David was the son of Jesse who fought Goliath and killed him with a stone. He was asked to live in Saul’s house so that he would play the harp for him because an evil spirit took control of Saul. One day, Saul wanted to kill David with a spear but God saved David.Jonathan was the son of Saul. He liked David and became his best friend. Jonathan and David promised each other that they would be loyal friends for ever. Jonathan gave his clothes, swords, bows and arrows, and his belt to David. Jonathan gave the robe that he was wearing to David because he loved him as he loved his own soul. Saul told Jonathan and his officers to kill David, but Jonathan pleaded on behalf of David that there was no reason for David to be killed.
One day, David asked Jonathan, ‘Why does your father, Saul want to kill me? What have I done?’ Jonathan told him that he would not die.
The two friends made a plan together. Jonathan asked David to go and hide himself at the other side of a rock. He promised to shoot three arJonathan and Davidrows at the other side of the rock. If it was safe to stay, he would give him a sign, but if not, he would ask him to run away.
David did as Jonathan advised. He hid at the side of the rock. Jonathan took a servant boy with him. He shot three arrows at the side of the rock. He told the boy that the arrow was at his front, showing a sign that David should run for his life because his father wanted to kill him. So Jonathan saved the life of David.
Helping a friend in need
A friend in need is a friend indeed. A true friend should be able to help his friend at the time of need. When Saul wanted to kill David, Jonathan saved the life of David. We can give food to those that are hungry. We should not be selfish. When you help a friend who is in need, whenever you find yourself in need, God will bring a helper to you.
The love that should exist among people
There should be love among people. The love should be unselfish love. Pupils should learn to help those in need. People that are in danger should be helped. Pupils should learn to protect one another. We are to be our brother’s keeper. We should share things among our friends. We are to share our food with those that are hungry. We should show love to the sick and the handicapped.
Moral lessons
1 God wants us to love one another.
2 God wants us to tell the truth always.
3 When we do not show love to others, We cause much pain to ourselves and to others,
4 Jonathan gave David his clothes, sword, bow and arrow and his belt. God wants us to share things with one another that way.
