7. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.

There are many gifts of nature without which human survival on Earth is impossible. Some of these gifts include water, oxygen, and the forest. The last is of particular interest. Forests occupy a vast landmass and are found in many parts of the world. They are uncultivated lands thickly covered with trees. Forests have played a significant role in the survival of humans. Unfortunately, thousands of hectares are destroyed each year due to human activities. It is however becoming increasingly obvious that if appropriate steps are not taken to curb the wave of forest destruction, the future survival of humans is hanging in the balance. This realisation is fueling the campaign to preserve this wonderful gift of nature.

Forests are more important to humans than humans are to them. Forest trees serve as protection against erosion. Without the canopy provided by trees, the land will be exposed to all the elements such as strong winds and heavy rainfall. The strong winds blow the soil while running water washes away the topsoil with its nutrients. Thus, the most fertile land becomes barren. Wood from trees also serves as an important material in building construction. It is cut and processed for use in building houses and shelters which provide protection against the inclement weather. With this, the forest shields both humans and the Earth. It is therefore important to ensure the continued availability of this important natural resource. To this end, there is the need for the relevant authorities to enact laws requiring that trees felled are replaced. Where such laws already exist, efforts must be made to enforce compliance.

The inventiveness of humans has led to the discovery of another use of forest trees. Logs can be cut, chopped into pieces, ground by machines and turned into wood pulp, which then goes through some other processes, and paper is the end product. We can imagine the great things timber does when we look at the tons of books that are produced and read worldwide. Thanks to technology, it is now possible to operate a paperless society to some extent. Everyone must therefore continue to take a conscious effort to protect the forest by going paperless. Soft copies of books should be preferred to hard copies. More newspaper publishers now have online outlets where news items are published. Hence, subscription to these outlets will ensure a reduction in the demand for paper.

Forests feed the earth, humans, and animals that live in them. Through the addition of humus and vegetable matter from dead leaves and droppings of animals, the soil is replenished with mulch, minerals, and manure, which are much better than fertilizers. Humans also get food from the nutrient-packed plants and animals of the forest and even use them for medical purposes. Thus, governments must discourage the cultivation of forests as farmlands by creating forest reserves. Such reserves should be protected by law to prevent encroachment. This will ensure unfettered growth of trees, and ultimately, the survival of humans.

(a) In three sentences, one for each, state three benefits derived from forests.

(b) In three sentences, one for each, state three measures to control deforestation.

WASSCE 2020 ENGLISH LANGUAGE 2 (ESSAY) ANSWERS

QUESTION 1

Apata Memorial College, Lagos State.
4th November 2020.

Dear Jide,

It is my pleasure to respond to the letter you left on my table the last time you visited our dormitory with Daddy. I believe you wrote that letter stealthily without Daddy’s notice. Seeing it would not go down well with the widower who has kept his promise to provide us with a sound education since Mummy passed on.

In your letter, you mentioned your interest in business and the possibility that you might leave school for business soon. I have no doubt about your interest in business; the undeniable fact is that you are a potential business tycoon. However, I think you need to exercise patience before making that dream a reality. I am not oblivious to the fact that, although we are twins, we are driven by different passions, and our careers are different.

Please get me right, Jide. My aim is not to discourage your interest in business, but I would like to offer you some advice that I am sure will help guide you toward a better path.

First, I want to remind you that you are currently in the third year at Adeyemo College, and in no time, you will be writing your Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), after which you will proceed to the senior class. Rather than quitting school, why not consider opting for the commercial class in senior secondary school? As a commercial student, subjects like economics, commerce, and financial accounting will help develop your business skills and prepare you to become an educated business mogul in the near future. I believe you want to be an educated business tycoon, not just a peddler or rugged smuggler. Patience and proper education are what you need.

Another way to carry out this plan is to study hard as a commercial student when you get to the senior class. I understand that your academic performance has not been as stellar as mine, and your interest is in business. However, I believe you are cut out for a better future, and your passion can drive you toward great success. I advise that you put your passion for business into your commercial subjects and the essential subjects like English and Mathematics. This way, when you finish your SSCE, you will have good grades and be ready to proceed to a higher institution to become an educated businessman.

Another route you could consider is studying business-related courses such as Business Administration or Economics in a higher institution. This will equip you with the necessary knowledge to become the business mogul you aspire to be. Have you ever thought about places like Harvard Business School? I believe you can reach such a lofty height.

Jide, you can be the best in your business endeavors if you take the right path. To be candid, quitting school for business is not the best option. I advise that you dedicate your time to your studies. Doing this will complement Daddy’s efforts.

My dear twin brother, I want you to consider education as key and important in whatever you wish to become in life. I believe you will take my advice and reconsider your plan. I hope to see you during the Christmas break in December when we can talk more as brothers.

Yours sincerely,
Bolaji.

QUESTION 2

The Importance of Promoting Good Reading Habits in Students

Reading is the process of identifying and understanding the meaning of written or printed words. An adage says that “readers are leaders,” meaning that reading places one above others through acquired knowledge, wisdom, and understanding over time. What distinguishes a brilliant student from a mediocre student is reading. While the brilliant student demonstrates deep knowledge and understanding through dedicated reading, the mediocre student shows mediocrity due to a lack of dedication to reading.

It is unfortunate that the reading culture is gradually being eroded among the students of the twenty-first century. The irony is that while the information age should make students better readers with better knowledge and deeper understanding, it has led to a degeneration in the reading culture, as students feed their eyes and minds with junk rather than developing good reading habits. Many students belong to one social media platform or another, and quality time is not spent on reading. Many are fascinated by the distractions of fashion.

It is important to promote good reading habits in students because good readers become good leaders. Reading is both educative and informative. A studious student makes a good leader. Reading gives one knowledge of history. How would a lazy and mediocre student know or understand the history of Nigeria, the great leaders such as Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, or important moments like the Civil War or the military interregnum? It takes a good reading habit. Students who have mastered the history of their country become great leaders. As Aristotle said, it takes a sound mind in a healthy body to become a great leader. He also recommended that the educated should rule the uneducated. A society ruled by mediocrity will experience crises.
